Sealants

A dentist is examining a patient 's teeth with a mirror.

Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to shield them from cavities. Your teeth usually have deep grooves that are hard to clean, making them susceptible to decay.

Though typically used for children, adults can benefit from this treatment as well. The sealants can wear over time and will need monitoring and restoration. Luckily, the process for restoration is as easy as the initial application.

How are dental sealants placed?

Sealant placement is a quick and comfortable procedure for patients. The process begins with cleaning and drying the tooth or teeth being treated, followed by the application of an acidic gel to enhance the bond.

Next, the sealant is placed on the grooves of the tooth and hardened with a special blue light. The material is thin and will not cause any discomfort or interfere with the natural bite of the patient.
